Jay-Z- Lick A Shot For Obama

Kidz In The Hall- Work To Do (Obama ‘08)

A † The Universe

Written by pistachionut on Saturday, 1 of November , 2008 at 3:09 pm

Last night, Kwapis and I went to the Nike/Montalbán theater for a special screening of Justice’s tour documentary A Cross The Universe. The event doubled as the release for Busy P/So Me’s Air Force One. Busy P (producer), So Me and Roman Gavras (directors) introduced the film, and they were accompanied by Xavier and Gaspard afterwards.

When we got the invitation to the event, I watched the trailer to the film. I must admit, I was a bit dubious. It seemed like “To Protect and Entertain: The Movie.” Thankfully, “To Protect and Entertain” is a much fresher movie that it is a song. The film focused less on the actual live performances, but on the journey, and what happens to French people in America. The tour manager, Bouchon, becomes obsessed with buying guns, although his knowledge of gun laws is sub par. This eventually leads to an arrest in a restaurant. The bus driver, Roger, is entering the Guiness Book of World Records for “Lowest Note Sung” at 8 Hz. Gaspard gets a quickie marriage in Vegas, Xavier gets attacked by a drunken fan before their LA show, and DJ Mehdi goes skinny dipping. These are just a few on the antics in the movie, it’s recommended as a fun see when it comes out on DVD December 9th. The guys did a Q&A after the show, during which many people asked if they could fuck the legendary duo. While that was going on, we took some shitty phone pictures (below).

Kanye West has Gone Crazy

Written by ashkap on Sunday, 26 of October , 2008 at 7:59 pm

Off of Kanye West’s upcoming fourth studio release, 808 & Heartbreak, we have a track entitled “Robocop”

It sucks.

808 & Heartbreak’s only possible redeeming factor is its remixableness. Other than that, it is possibly the biggest rapper in the world, singing. In Autotune.

Music From Entourage: 10/19/08

Written by pistachionut on Monday, 20 of October , 2008 at 3:31 pm

Last night’s Entourage had especially good musical choices (I know, we’ve said it before, but chill). During a model party for Dolce & Gabana, Dizzee Rascal and Calvin Harris’ single “Dance Wiv Me” blasted through the speakers. The song has been largely overlooked in the US, although congrats to Dizzee for his chart success in the UK.

Dizzee Rascal ft. Calvin Harris - Dance Wiv Me

Later in the episode, A Tribe Called Quest’s “Check the Rhime” lingered in the background as Vince and the crew prepared for a private flight out of Van Nuys airport. Quality.

As the episode closed out, Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” played softly over Ari’s emotional goodbye with Vince. Thom Yorke’s soft vocals almost brought me to tears, not gonna lie. Brilliant use of the song. They really must be making enough money to afford licensing for almost anything…

New Mixtapes!

Written by lupethefiasco on Wednesday, 15 of October , 2008 at 6:01 pm

A couple of great, new mixtapes hit the blogs in the past couple of days.

First, we have another Charles Hamilton mixtape, entitled “It’s Charles Hamilton.” He’s releasing a whole bunch of mixtapes in a short span of time. I think I’ve already mentioned the whole like Lil’ Wayne but better thing. Anyways I’ve put a bunch of tracks up, and a link to the whole mixtape. Enjoy!

Charles Hamilton- It’s Charles Hamilton

Charles Hamilton- Mr. Perfect

Charles Hamilton- The Honeymoon’s Over

This song samples the Clash song that M.I.A. sampled with her hit single “Paper Planes.”
Charles Hamilton- Niñol del Infierno (Hell Boys)

Charles Hamilton- Sunday Morning Testimonial

Next, we have The Very Best Mixtape, which consists of Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit, AKA The Very Best. This mixtape has been on my watch list for a little while, and it didn’t disappoint. It is a really fun, enjoyable mixtape. I personally consider it an album, even though it’s free and described as a mixtape. I have a few songs and the link below. Enjoy!

The Very Best Mixtape

The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit)- Boyz

The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit)- Salota

The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit)- Funa Funa

The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit)- Dinosaur On the Ark

Nicotune #2

Written by ashkap on Tuesday, 14 of October , 2008 at 7:06 pm

TV on the Radio just released their third studio album, Dear Science, and it deserves almost as much praise as it is receiving. Pitchfork Media rated it a 9.2. They gave their last album, Return to Cookie Mountain, a 9.1. Someone up in Pitchfork obviously decided that TV on the Radio made a one-tenth-of-a-point improvement. Good for them, better for all of us. “Dancing Choose,” the third track, bumps along on jittery percussion and a synth buzz throughout, deceptively beginning with a rushed pace before horns and guitars enter and change the feel of the song. The catchy bit, “In my mind I’m drowning butterflies/broken dreams and alibis/that’s fine. I’ve seen my palette blown to monochrome- hollow heart clicks hollowtone/in time,” is a fantastic vocal piece. I highly recommend the album, but this is the song that you will find yourself coming back to.

Dancing Choose - TV on the Radio

Next, an older song by Broken Social Scene member Kevin Drew. His album, Broken Social Scene Presents: Spirit If… was one of my favorite albums of 2007. The “Broken Social Scene Presents:” series highlights one member of the notoriously expansive group and records their songs with the entire band. Kevin Drew’s inaugural entry is rife with poppy gems and rousing rock ballads. “Safety Bricks” is my favorite track, a traditional BSS style song, with whispery vocals and excellent arrangements. It’s been stuck in my head for a little over a year now.

O.B.A.M.A. You Are Correct!

Written by pistachionut on Tuesday, 7 of October , 2008 at 4:39 pm

Depending on your point of view, Barack Obama is one of the greatest things ever to happen to American politics. Unfortunately, if he loses Noeember 4th, we could be very very fucked. Adam Freeland, a UK based DJ/producer is helping the cause, with the release of his track entitled “Aer Obama,” a clever mix of Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic” and robot voices chanting Obama’s namesake. Highly reccd.

The Tape @ Detour

Written by gzabriel on Monday, 6 of October , 2008 at 6:21 pm

This Saturday, 4 Tape bloggers ventured into the heart of downtown Los Angeles on an ugly overcast afternoon to witness and in part review the 3rd annual Detour Festival. My arrival was belated due to a delicious lunch but upon my arrival I met up with my fellow bloggers and headed to Tape Official Favoritest Band: The Mae Shi. Last time we saw the Mae Shi had been at the glorious F Yeah Fest at which they delivered a performance full of well rehearsed spazz outs, energetic shouts, and danceable seizure pop. Detour yielded similar results with the boys delivering rousing renditions of classic tunes such as Run To Your Grave, 7xx7, and I Get Almost Everything. They tramped around the stage knocking over tom drums, somersaulting mid screech, getting tangled in perilous microphone chords, and sharing the magic of an Omnichord with an eager crowd. Surprisingly, they were able to put their rainbow tarp to good use and a good amount of audience members got to participate in the fun.

After The Mae Shi we wandered around the festival taking in the sights, somewhere amongst the drifting from band to band we discovered what lupethefiasco had previously encountered at Lollapalooza. The most delicious drink of drinks was sampled and adored. I, particularly affectionate of the Half n Half, refer to it as a drink of the gods of tea.
We headed over to the stage at which Datarock was playing in order to see Black Lips. Though we at The Tape do love Datarock, the live performance takes away some of the tongue in cheek geekiness of their album in favor for a hard rocking Norwegian party. This wouldn’t be such a bad thing had our love for Datarock not come from a strong affinity for exactly their brand of tongue in cheek geekiness. Alas, The Black Lips took the stage in not-quite-as-drunk as we would have liked form and proceeded to rip through their catalog the highlight being somewhere around the time they played O Katrina. I personally felt disappointed by the performance but maybe I had set my hopes too high for a slot that was late afternoon and a band that was far too sober per their usual standards. The pilgrim hat was a nice touch though.  (Read more…)

Weekly Hip-Hop #9

Written by lupethefiasco on Sunday, 5 of October , 2008 at 11:44 am

Sorry for the delays… I have a few videos and a bunch of new songs, so enjoy!

Another “Love Lockdown” remix. This one’s good, don’t worry.
Kanye West- Love Lockdown (T-Minus 321 Remix)

At the ripe age of 15, this set gave young A-Trak a title he may still hold as the world’s best DJ.
A-Trak- 1997 World DMC Set

Wale = Good.
Wale- Hate

A nice homage to Brother Ali, from hip-hop group Noesis.
Noesis- Allen Iverson Yall

A bonus track from Paper Trail.
T.I.- Collect Call [Bonus Track]

Another Paper Trail bonus track.
T.I.- I Know You Missed Me [Bonus Track]

I don’t know how hip-hop this is, but who cares?
Santogold- L.E.S. Artistes (Left/Right Remix)

A new song from The Game . Probably a LAX bonus track, but I’m not sure. Anyways, this song by The Game is much deeper than most of his stuff, and he shouts out Lupe… Awesomeeeee.
The Game- Through My Eyes f/ Mars
