Lupe Fiasco- Paris, Tokyo (Remix) + Radiohead Remixes

Written by lupethefiasco on Monday, 22 of September , 2008 at 2:07 pm

A few new tunes for all of you. Lupe has finally released his Paris, Tokyo remix which features Pharrell, Q-Tip, and Sarah Green. It’s a good track with a nice Q-Tip verse, and a really, really good Lupe verse. Two really nice things come from this track. Number 1 is that Fiascogate is behind both Q-Tip and Lupe, and they can put past disagreements behind them and collaborate on a track. Number 2 is that the auto-tune disease (Kanye, Lil Wayne) has not rubbed off on Lupe.

In other news, Radiohead is holding another remix contest and two of my favorite electronic musicians/remixers have released super remixes. One from Diplo and one from Flying Lotus. Enjoy!

Aesop Rock- The Troubadour, September 13th

Written by lupethefiasco on Sunday, 14 of September , 2008 at 3:55 pm

Last night myself and #1 homie attended Aesop Rock’s first night at the Troubadour.
P.S. I forgot my camera, so I apologize for the Iphone pictures.

The show started off with an absolute bang as Busdriver absolutely killed it. Besides him having the coolest live set-up ever, he also had the fastest flow I’ve ever heard from anyone. He put so much into his live show, it was nice to see a hip-hop artist who can still have a creative live show. It consisted of Anti MC doing the beats and occasionally playing some guitar, while Busdriver did everything else. Busdriver had two mics; one normal one, and another one that was a pitch modulator with a foot pedal controlling it. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. At some points I turned to #1 homie and just said “Holy shit he’s amazing.”

Kanye, T.I., and Weezy (No, not Swagger Like Us Pt. 2)

Written by lupethefiasco on Sunday, 7 of September , 2008 at 8:51 pm

This years VMA’s kind of sucked, only because Lupe played for all of two minutes. You either put someone on for a whole song, or leave them off the bill all together. Don’t disrespect him like that. That is enough of a rant. We have 3 videos and a live mp3 for you guys, so enjoy!

Kanye West premieres his new single “Love Lockdown”.

Kanye West- Love Lockdown (Live)

T.I. performing “Whatever You Like” and another one. “Whatever You Like” is so catchy.

Last, and probably least we have a Lil Wayne medley.

Pacific Division

Written by lupethefiasco on Wednesday, 3 of September , 2008 at 7:52 pm

Pacific Division is an awesome hipster hip-hop group that is part of the new wave hipster hop movement. Yes, the same hipster movement that includes The Cool Kids, who happen to be friends with Pacific Division. Essentially every rapper in the hipster movement knows one another.

A few of The Tape members met Pac Division at Rock The Bells Los Angeles, and they’re absolutely hilarious. I probably shouldn’t go into any further detail… But take my word they were hilarious guys, who couldn’t have been nicer. Plus, they came on stage during The Cool Kids set to teach everyone a dance. Anyways I have a couple of songs for you guys, so enjoy!

P.S. These boys are from our fabulous home town of L.A.

Thanksgiving

Written by lupethefiasco on Tuesday, 2 of September , 2008 at 7:01 pm

The smartest man in the world, Saul Williams recently posted a new Myspace blog entry. While you guys may think Myspace is lame or whatever, Saul posted a really funny, insightful article on Thanksgiving and how it’s so evil. I hope you enjoy it along with some great Saul songs.

I’ve been through many phases in my life and I purposely start this missive in remembrance of my days of being militantly anti-Thanksgiving in deep respect of the millions of Native Americans that were massacred across this land. But with time, comes forgiveness, and me and many of my militant or once militant friends have come to forgive the horrid realities of the first Thanksgiving to delve deeper into the simple warmth and beauty of being surrounded by loved ones and good food on a cozy November day.
Well, the story goes that as age progresses so does wisdom, our understanding of compassion, and for some, the fervor of our militancy. Although, I seldom bring up unfortunate misgivings of the Native Americans (I leave that to the pre-teens at the table who are just cutting their teeth on thinking outside of the box), me and the teenagers have begun to warm up to the plight of the Turkey.
Just last year, I spent a Friday evening with a young turkey that had been rescued from a factory farm. It was warm and fuzzy like a cat, it purred when I rubbed its belly, it looked me in my eyes with the same understanding that I see in my dogs and spent an hour playing nicely with me and my niece. It didn’t take long for me to regain my anti-Thanksgiving stance, but this time with a new cause: an end to uncompassionate traditions.

Why participate in a practice that does more harm than good on a day when gratitude and compassion should rule?
Why not give the planet something to be thankful for? And your body. A good choice of seitan, field grains, or tofu stuffed with a chicken-broth free stuffing and smothered in mushroom gravy (the gravy is the key!) is a scrumptious way of saying thank you to the Earth and life that nourishes our existence on this planet. I know that being ‘green’ or cruelty free seems like a simple trend, but so did being anti-slavery, or pro-womens rights.

The fact is that the growing popularity of vegetarianism is inevitable, but your participation in a nationwide pastime blinded by its ode to the past is not. The future is now and cannot include the mindless ingestion of cruelty in all its forms while waving flags for peace. If you envision a non-violent world, participate in the one that already exists. It is as simple as a choice you can make here and now to try something new this November, to distinguish your recipes from your grandmothers. Replace the lard with something that won’t kill grandpa. Replace your insensitivity with a growing state of concern and awareness or own up to the violent realities and toxins you ingest. Harsh words, eh? Its even harder on the stomache.

My goal is not to enact judgment on any and everyone who eats meat. I’ve had enough fried chicken in my life to be tried and convicted of genocide by a jury of free-range chickens. My simple goal is challenge every reader to begin the process of envisioning what their participation in a utopian, healthy planet would look like. I have spent most of my short life fighting to remind friends, family, and those I’ve come into contact with that just because something has persisted for a few hundred years, or even a just a few decades, doesn’t mean that it must be perpetuated. Our understanding of self, God, love, and planet are all streamlining in ways that mirror our ability to communicate through the technology that advances that process. The cynicism that wishes me good luck but believes grandpa will never change, is dead on. Grandpa will die. But as for you, you can fight against the poetry of our times or you can triumph in connecting the dots between your freedom and your responsibility and watch how the winds of change conspire to thank you.

Until then, the saying ‘you are what you eat’ proves most of y’all to be a bunch of jive-ass turkeys.

Saul aka _________. (What up Nas?)

ps. And don’t fall for that ‘Organic’ or ‘Free Range’ bullshit. Trusting an FDA stamp on your food is like trusting an oil lobbyist in a solar paneled car discussion. Google ‘Vegan Recipes’ and add your own personal flair and send me a thank you note when you subsequently drop those few pounds your trainer couldn’t help you with. ‘Vegan Nutrition’ for those who think you need meat for dietary health or just google ‘MY NUTS’.

“One farmer says to me, ‘You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make bones with’; and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying his system with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plough along in spite of every obstacle.” ~Henry David Thoreau, Where I Lived And What I Lived For.

New Lupe!!!

Written by lupethefiasco on Sunday, 31 of August , 2008 at 11:01 pm

A couple of videos from Lupe performing alleged new material at the University of Indiana. I’m not even going to critique these songs, because he says they are very rough cuts… But this does make me very excited or his next (hopefully not last) album.

GZA- Pro Tools

Written by lupethefiasco on Wednesday, 20 of August , 2008 at 12:04 am

GZA is one of the most famous Wu-Tang members. He has also released the best solo albums from the Wu-Tang Clan (in my opinion), and this is no different. The self proclaimed “genius” really lives up to his humble nickname with his latest album. GZA is known for his lyrical mastery, but I couldn’t help but notice how tremendous his beats were on his latest album. They all had a similar vibe to them, but they all had their own personality. Oh yeah, and the lyrics were straight fire as well.

It’s really hard to outdo his masterful album “Liquid Swords”, but he came as close as you can with Pro Tools. I didn’t expect this album to be half as good as it is. I expected a piece of junk that was created to circulate hype, and get GZA a little bit of extra money. But that was rash and unfair of me to judge GZA, The Genius like that.

A few odd things I noticed on this album:
#1 No Kung-Fu movie samples
#2 half of the album is under the alias “GZA” while the other half is under “GZA The Genius”
#3 Many of the songs revolve around the theme of “Cinema,” or “Movies”

Anyways, here are a couple of standout tracks.

GZA The Genius- Paper Plate

GZA- Columbian Ties

GZA- Cinema

Rock The Bells, Los Angeles

Written by lupethefiasco on Sunday, 10 of August , 2008 at 9:47 pm

Words and pictures by Tristan and Willie.

Yesterday we headed down to the middle of nowhere to catch Rock The Bells in Los Angeles. We would first like to say that it was a monumental day for The Tape, as it was the first time we had enough press credentials to receive press passes. We would also like to take a moment to thank LeToya Jackson and TC for being awesome. Huge post with pictures and videos after the jump.
