Major Lazer are adding some spice to the now traditional remix contest. In addition releasing stems to “Hold the Line,” “Keep It Going Louder” and “Pon De Floor,” you can also download the .psd of the figures above. Maybe you want to see Mr. Lazer next to a giant penis? Maybe you just want to see him lounging on the beach. Diplo, Switch, and the good folks at Downtown records have given you the opportunity to do this. As for the audio component of the contest, there’s not much that can be done to “Hold the Line” that hasn’t been done already, and there aren’t very many ways I can think of improving “Pon De Floor,” but the contest for “Keep It Going Louder” should yield some interesting results, since it’s essentially a pop song. So what’s stopping all y’all, get to it!

The El Rey doors opened at 8:00 PM. There was a line halfway around the block and a sense of urgency and excitement. Matt and Kim have developed quite a loyal fanbase over the past year, going from playing small Hollywood club King King last June, to a packed Echoplex for the F Yeah Fest last August, all the way to a sold out El Rey Theater last night. The utter exuberance from the fans was reflected right back by the band. Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino expressed genuine gratitude for the crowd, and frequently referenced how at home they were on the stage. Smiles never left their faces as they blasted through their material past and present. With covers of “Rock and Roll Pt. 2″ by Gary Glitter, Europe’s “Final Countdown” and “Jump On It” by Sir Mix-A-Lot spread throughout the set (”Jump On It” was literally placed in the middle of “Good Ol’ Fashioned Nightmare”) the duo kept the energy level past 11 the entire night. “You can’t stop it! You tried but you can’t!” Matt yelled amidst the cover of Glitter’s sports anthem. But that’s just it. You can’t stop Matt and Kim. You can’t stop anything at their shows. At least two dozen fans leaped off the stage into adoring arms, and two to three people were surfing the crowd at any given time. The El Rey security seemed to give up. You couldn’t stop it. You couldn’t stop the enthusiasm with which they played, and the genuine happiness they were feeling on stage. They began their set with “It’s a Fact - Printed Stained,” the opener to their debut album, and a perfect opener for the show. Everyone in the audience knew what was coming, and the venue seemed to scream “1! 2! 1 2 3 4!” heading into the chorus. The front rows were in constant motion, bouncing up and down to no end. By the time they reached “Cinders” the crowd couldn’t be contained. Heads were lost amongst heads, bodies collided to the beat and nobody in the entire Miracle Mile district could avoid a smile. Kim even made her live singing debut on “Lessons Learned,” while everyone else screamed at the top of their lungs to help her out. The sense of community was thrilling and the setlist was perfect. “Yea Yeah” and “Daylight” closed out the night on the best of all possible notes. Matt and Kim truly make their home on the stage and aim to please every single person in attendance. They did just that.

Earlier in the night, opener Amanda Blank made her first performance of the tour, and I’m not sure how much the crowd was really feeling her. I seemed to be one of Blank’s sole fans at the show, and she came off a tad overwhelmed. Beginning with “DJ” was a questionable choice, as her singing voice isn’t her main feature. But one thing is for certain, and it has never come into question: Blank can flow like few others. She closed out her set with three rap numbers, “Might Like You Better,” “Gimme What You Got” and “A Love Song.” She began “Might Like You Better” whispering the hook over Hot Chip’s remix of Junior Boys’ “In the Morning” which worked incredibly well. The crowd began to feel it a bit at that point, and her confidence increased with the crowd’s involvement. With “A Love Song,” she definitely closed on a high note. Some of the crowd noticed the LL Cool J homage, while others just appreciated the tongue-in-cheek cleverness of the lyrics and the Santogold-sampled beat.
The night on the whole was amazing. Matt and Kim established themselves as the perfect party band, and I found myself drenched in more sweat than the last time I saw a Girl Talk show. Everyone ended the night happy, including the performers and maaaaybe even some of the security staff. A job well done all around.
