Shearwater Return With “Castaways”

Following up 2008’s stellar LP Rook should have been a difficult task, but Shearwater are making it easy, with what looks like an even better 2010 release. Granted I’m saying all of this after only hearing the first single, but the single is that good. The Austin, Texas Matador signees are giving away “Castaways” for free, in anticipation for The Golden Archipelago, which hits stores February 23rd. The track comes in with some beautiful vocals, reminding me of a far less haunting Antony Hegarty. Some anthem-esque drums enter the track, while singer Jonathan Meiburg really shows off his beautiful voice. When the song seems to reach a peak, it suddenly dies down and a bit of ambient experimentation enters before going back to its core groove. All of this occurs before the “hook” comes in, which really made me wonder what was in store during my first listen. The track builds off of itself, not establishing new parts, but extending the original idea into something new and beautiful.
The new record is said to focus on “Life on islands – a world of lushness and austerity, silence and sudden cataclysms. From rising sea levels to displaced populations, Meiburg travels from the Falklands to Madgascar, from the Bikini Atoll to the Tierra Del Fuego.” Based on this single and the wonderful previous record Rook, I have very high expectations for this new record. It seems like every day more and more records get announced that are going to make 2010 better than 2009, if that’s at all possible. Make sure to download “Castaways” below. The above artwork is for “Castaways”, and not The Golden Archipelago. Pre-order it right here. The MP3 below is 192 kbps, if you want a 256 version, just click here.

Really liking what I’ve heard so far, Rook was amazing and The Golden Archipelago sounds like it’ll be just as good. There’s a good article about it here http://tinyurl.com/yht9pqn it’s also got Their tour dates and an album trailer which is worth checking out.
