New Harlem Track

I posted about these dudes here, and since then they’ve gotten a whole lot bigger. Recent Matador signees have a record coming out this April, entitled Hippies. Their debut record came out a while ago courtesy of some tiny label, and it got some good hype. Garage rock-y goodness mixed in with some brilliant melodies made Free Drugs a favorite of ‘08 for me. To hype up the new record (sooooo early), the band is giving away the first single, “Friendly Ghost”, via many a internet hot spot (Twitter, Myspace, Matablog). The track “may or not be about Casper”, according to one Harlem member. Anyways, I don’t quite know how I feel about the track. Someone said (I forgot who) that Harlem is starting to sound like Spoon, which gets more and more accurate with each and every listen. This comparison is very rough, and very little of the track actually resembles Spoon, but they do have a bit of a lower-fi Spoon vibe to them at points. A fast punk drum lick accompanies a scrappy guitar riff and fun vocals. This song is very catchy, but a little too rough around the edges for me to really get into. This may be a product of my sickness with the “lo-fi” genre in general, and have less to do with the actual band. The singer shows some pretty impressive vocals on this track, something I really overlooked on their last record. I’m definitely going to pick up their new record when it hits stores, partly because of this single and partly because of their last record.
