Givers

I’m not so hip to the New Orleans indie rock scene, but if a lot of the bands are as good as Givers, I’ve been missing out for quite some time. Givers consists of 5 members, creating afro-pop indie goodness. The band takes aspects from everything that’s going right in the indie music scene right now, and completely expands the ideas. Vocals are split between male Taylor Guarisco and female Tif Lamson. The shared vocals give it a bit of a Dirty Projectors vibe, especially when the quirky, afro pop guitar line comes in.

The opening track on their EP is “Up Up Up”, a wonderful track, oozing in joyous guitar parts and well executed harmonies. Ms. Lamson has a wonderful voice, that accompanies Taylor Guarisco’s perfectly. Another favorite of mine is “Saw You First”, which you can check out a video for below. A bit of percussion leaning towards the tribal side of things accent some guitar noodling, until the track is ready to emerge. Great duel vocals enter, although they’re not as poppy and more somber than the melodies on “Up Up Up.” “Saw You First” is uptempo, but I get a much more depressing vibe from it. It’s a lot darker than the rest of the tracks on the EP, giving the 5-track record a diversity it lacked up until this point. However, as dark as it is in comparison, it’s still a catchy tune & sheds its dark nature about half way through. Check out the video for it below, and make sure to get to know this band, it’s not long before you see their names everywhere.
