The Mantles

The Mantles are a San Fran band, one which seems to be one of the few lo-fi bands I’m listening to at the moment. The change in direction happened rather dramatically, but I now find myself craving music that has a focus on production, along with experimenting boundaries. The Mantles don’t make the kind of shitty lo-fi that characterizes the genre. They make dark, brooding, intelligent rock music that has a garage-y feel to it. Smart guitar lines are sprinkled throughout the LP, accented with sloppy yet stylish drums, and interesting vocals.

“What We Do Matters” is a fast-paced track, with hooting and hollering coming from the vocals. This track has a nice punk rock feel to it, clocking in at just under three minutes. Another one of my favorites is “Don’t Lie”, the lead single and a gentler track than most of the rest. Poppy drums contrast nicely with melancholy vocals and guitar lines, creating two opposite forces that work very nicely together. The song doesn’t really move away from this idea, although it tends to get a bit louder at times. Group vocals are apparent later in the track, and y’all know that I’m always a sucker for some well placed and well executed group vocals. “Yesterday’s Gone” is another mysterious track, sounding like a punk version of an old western song. The vocals are turned down in the mix, and the guitar part really takes the spotlight throughout the entire track.

The Mantles’ debut record is out now on Siltbreeze, which you can pick up right here. They also have a 7″ out with Slumberland, which features a couple of nice tracks not on the record. That one is unfortunately sold out. Download “Don’t Lie” below.
