New Records: Lightning Bolt- Earthly Delights

When I went to FYF Fest a couple weeks back, one band I was dying to see was Providence, Rhode Island duo, Lightning Bolt. Brian Gippendale (drums and vocals) along with Brian Chibson (bass) make up the masked duo, one of the craziest groups out there today. I didn’t end up catching their set, but that doesn’t mean I can’t talk about their new record, Earthly Delights, which comes out tomorrow. One of the more experimental records I’ll take the time to listen to, Lightning Bolt seem to make a shitload of noise, but somehow make it work. The first single, “Colossus” is one of the more melodic songs on the disc, clocking in at just over 7 minutes. A real metal feel surrounds this track, with the title really living up to its name. Nothing but colossus, this track shreds.
Another one of my favorites is “Funny Farm”, a track that features Zach Hill like drums, some unrecognizable vocals, and a ridiculous guitar/bass part. The song switches back between its normal feel and double time, upping its already high insanity level at these crucial points in the track. If you’re not up for experimentation, don’t listen to this album. It’s pretty wacky, but it’s also really fun, especially when you’re driving. “S.O.S.” is another song in which the title accurately describes the track. Never really establishing a melody, this track just kind of jams itself out, takes a second long break, then starts jamming again. You get some instrumental hits a bit later in the track, but nothing crazy when comparing it with the rest of the track.
This album comes out tomorrow, courtesy of Load Records, and it’s highly recommended if you’re a fan of Black Dice, speed metal, or industrial noise. Shit, even if you’re up for an experiment or a good time, I recommend purchasing this album. You can check out the tracklist below, and download “Colossus” as well.
