New Records: Atlas Sound- Logos

It’s a bit scary to think that Logos almost never got released. A while back, Bradford Cox posted a track onto his Mediafire, which he didn’t realize had all of his files on it. Some internet douche went into his (should have been) private files, and leaked a whole lot of new Deerhunter and Atlas Sound music. One of the albums he happened to leak was Logos. Bradford said that the album would never be released, but luckily it was, and now you’re going to hear me ramble about how great it is. Enjoy!
The LP starts out with “The Light That Failed”, a wonderful way to start the album. It really sets the tone for the entire record, giving it this kind of dark, ominous mood. Bradford moans over some glitchy electronics and acoustic guitar, swirling and entangling itself in soothing, hypnotizing noise. The track effortlessly transforms into “An Orchid”, the second track on the disc. “An Orchid” is a very simple track, revolving around one melody throughout the majority of the song. It’s simplicity is what makes it great however, really establishing its mood, something that seems to be very important on this disc. “Walkabout” is easily one of my favorite tracks of the year, but it just doesn’t belong on the album. It’s uptempo feel and happy atmosphere contradicts with the vision Bradford is apparently trying to accomplish with the record. It should have maybe been released separately from the disc, but it’s such a great track it really doesn’t matter.
Skip a couple of tracks, and we arrive at “Sheila”, another amazing track. A catchy vocal hook, this song has a nice guitar riff that really comes to life during the breakdown. The halftime feel for the breakdown is really nice, creating a break between the main section. Another one of my favorites is “My Halo”, a melancholy walk in the park. The track has a bit of a shuffle to it, but never getting too excited. The track has this leash on it, always keeping it in check. “Kid Klimax” has some catchy electronics on it, and a nice effect on Bradford’s voice. This track may be the most artificial, but it’s also one of my favorites. The album ends with the title track, “Logos.” “Logos” is tremendously upbeat when being compared to the rest of the disc, featuring a really catchy synth line that enters the picture every once in a little while. I’m normally into an album going full circle, ending where it started, but I love what Bradford did with this track. It’s happy feel really closes the album nicely.
Bradford Cox really improved with Logos, establishing Atlas Sound as more than just a bedroom project. Logos is a brilliant album, easily one of my favorites of the year. Do yourself a favor and pick it up here (LP or CD). Check out the track listing below, and download “Walkabout.”
