Amanda Blank - I Love You

A bit late, but don’t worry about it. Our favorite misogynistic female rapper (if you will) is back with her full-length debut. Previously building fame off of dirty verses on songs by Spank Rock, XXXChange and Aaron LaCrate, Mrs. Blank’s full length debut is brilliantly produced and never loses the tenacity Blank showed in her earlier works. The album might be a bit more poppy, and not entirely rap, “Make It Take It” is actually a well-crafted Santogold/M.I.A.-type pop song. There’s a good deal of range even inside the boundaries of her raps. “Make Up” is reminiscent of Tiga in the beat and Tim and Eric in the lyrics. Another top track is the Chuck Inglish feature, “Lemme Get Some.” Blanks lyrics flow perfectly into the chorus, which actually has a Girl Talk-like sample based structure in a clever call and response. For me though, the standout on the album is “I Love You.” Blank takes LL Cool J’s smash “I Need Love” and reworks it into a female version. It’s more than a sample though, it’s Blank’s thesis. She’s the man. The HBIC. She holds in her laugh as she says that she loves you. It’s strange that Cool J’s words actually fit Blank better than they fit LL himself. Of course there’s still the single “Might Like You Better” which has been a summer anthem and perfect in almost every regard. Props to Mrs. Blank, as she created a brilliant blend of hip hop and pop that should hold up for a long while.
Also, if you’re so inclined, Amanda Blank is opening for Matt and Kim at the El Rey Theater on August 27th. The Tape will be there, and it promises to be a fantastic show.
