J. Tillman/Evan Way/Big Search Live! At The Echo

Two nights ago (8/20/2009) I attended one of the folkiest shows I’ve ever been to. Flannel and beards a plenty, the night was also filled with fantastic music. The evening started off with Big Search, more commonly known as Matt Popieluch, lead singer of Foreign Born. Big Search’s music takes a different approach to that of his other projects. Looped based acoustic guitar and vocals, with some keyboard occasionally thrown in. It was very simple, and very pleasant. I don’t know just how much I enjoy his music and how much of it is respect for him as a musician, but either way, he put on a good show. His music with Foreign Born and Fool’s Gold is so fucking great, it’s hard to dislike anything he makes, regardless of how it actually sounds. I know how ridiculous that sounded, but it’s just how I feel on the subject. I have no mp3′s and the lighting in The Echo was funky, but enjoy a couple of pictures.
Up next was Evan Way and company, who just played under the Parson Red Heads moniker. They made lovely music, with an absolutely charming dynamic. The playful stage banter was entertaining, as the group charmed their way through 10 catchy folk tunes. The band is currently supporting a recently released 7″ on JAXART, which I highly recommend. The group consisted of Evan Way who sang and played guitar, his wife Brette who played the floor tom and sang, Sam Fowles who played guitar and sang, and Andy Creighton who played bass, percussion, vocals, and everything else. Check out a couple of pictures and “Raymond”, the A-side of their latest 7″.
J. Tillman then hit the stage with a full band, and absolutely blew me away. Playing guitar and singing, he really showcased his tremendous voice that is sometimes hidden when he drums for Fleet Foxes. Mr. Tillman really is meant to be a front man, but not the rambunctious kind… He didn’t speak a lot besides saying “thanks.” He led the band with his voice, bowing away me and I assume everyone else in the packed Echo. I have to admit, I had to duck out a little early to catch a 12:15 screening of Inglourious Basterds, but what J did in the time I was there was thoroughly enjoyable. He has a new album coming out September 8th on Western Vinyl, entitled Year In The Kingdom. You can pre-order it here.
