Pitchfork Music Festival: Sunday

Sunday started off on a very bittersweet note. On the sweet side, The Mae Shi were opening the festival on the main stage. On the bitter side, it was going to be their last show as The Mae Shi. Their is a lot of drama right now about that show and who was involved and such, but that’s beside the point. The Mae Shi (or Signals), absolutely killed it. They played stuff from HLLLYH, old stuff, new Signals stuff, and stuff with Kid Static and Yea Big. It was truly a show to remember. A highlight for me was when Yea Big and Kid Static came out and they performed some of the remix EP they did with The Mae Shi. “Run To The Facts” is an amazing song, which I’ll upload for you guys. The band also came into the crowd to shout “I Get (Almost) Everything I Want”, which was really fucking cool and it also surprised all the Flaming Lips fans who were dressed up as furries waiting for king douche Wayne Coyne to step on stage later that night. The next show I caught was Blitzen Trapper, who I never really liked (besides “Furr” of course). I get a really weird vibe from these guys, and their music just doesn’t really translate with me. I then headed over to catch the Canadian boys, Women, who put on a great set. The crowd was surprisingly into them, and got really excited when the first notes of “Black Rice” came through the speakers. These guys can work on their stage presence a bit (they rarely moved), but they did put on a great show regardless. I then took a bit of a break and didn’t even try to get in the photo pit to catch The Thermals. They played some great covers, including a Nirvana song. After this set, the day really kicked in. Canadian duo Japandroids played a killer set, absolutely shredding through their debut album. They played to a packed crowd, who really embraced the noise, that was almost too loud for me. These guys were a tremendously pleasant surprise. Up next was one of the festivals’ highlights, M83. Anthony Gonzales played a tremendous set, opening with “Graveyard Girl”, and playing other Saturdays = Youth hits like Kim & Jessie, Couleurs, and my personal favorite, We Own The Sky. He also played some old stuff which I didn’t enjoy as much, but found interesting nonetheless. I then headed over to Grizzly Bear, which seemed like it was what the crowd was most excited for. When the quartet hit the stage, the crowd erupted with applause. They played a very similar set to the one at the Wiltern I attended a month ago, but it was still great. They really know how to put on a fantastic show. After their set, I eagerly waited for Esau Mwamwaya to hit the stage with Radioclit as The Very Best, along with about 100 other people. Choosing between The Very Best against The Flaming Lips was a very easy decision for me. It also turned out to be a great one, as Esau and co. put on my favorite show of the weekend. As their set progressed more and more people showed up, and I didn’t see a single person not dancing. He played a lot of his mixtape, and brought out rapper Theophilus London to perform “Warm Heart Of Africa” with him. They were going to end with “Rain Dance” (the new track featuring M.I.A.), but upon Pitchfork’s request, encored with the Michael Jackson cover “Will You Be There”, the last track on the mixtape. It was really wonderful, a great way to end a fantastic weekend. Enjoy pictures and a couple of mp3’s.
