As many of you are well aware, UK duo Fuck Buttons are responsible for making some of the most genre defying, hypnotizing, trance inducing sounds most of us have ever heard. (Think Steve Reich meets Collections of Colonies of Bees meets Geotic) Their LP debut Street Horrrsing, which was met with a number of laudatory reviews, also sparked a drastic polarization of opinions, ranging from “a tsunami of tense oscillations and Brontosaurus-colonic tones”, to “ambient hipster garbage”. However, regardless of any negative criticism, any band that possesses such an idiosyncratic/obscure/provocative vision and still manages to garner a torrential downpour of acclaim, and a million plus myspace hits to boot is clearly doing something right. Indeed, I still can’t quite contextualize my opinions on the previously mentioned debut LP. Here’s hoping Tarot Sport (set to be released Oct. 20) is equally puzzling and incomprehensible!
Tracklist:
1. Surf Solar
2. Rough Steez
3. The Lisbon Maru
4. Olympians
5. Phantom Limb
6. Space Mountain
7. Flight Of The Feathered Serpent
No new tracks are yet available for download but the single Surf Solar can be streamed HERE (It sounds eerily similar to Bromst (in a good way))

Themselves have a new album coming out October 20th, on the always wonderful Anticon Records. The bay area duo are going back to their roots for this upcoming LP. They have the “‘don’t bite’ song, the diss track, the story rap, the “bootleggers beware” song, and the “don’t fuck with my DJ” jam, among others. In this way, Themselves revisit something classic in order to invent their own future-school entry to the annals.” There also is a mention of a “TVOTR” type track, which gets me very curious and excited. They’ll be doing a couple tour dates, but nothing significant has been announced yet, as they just finished a tour.

Brooklyn dance punk act DD/MM/YYYY (as their press email says - there’s no wrong way to say it) have signed to Impose Records. Also Brookyln-based, Impose Records is currently home to the similarly styled Team Robespierre. And if that wasn’t enough about Brooklyn, DD/MM/YYYY will be opening for Del Tha Funkee Homosapien at one of Jelly NYC’s pool party on August 16th. After that, they’ll be touring extensively throughout the U.S. including a Los Angeles stop on October 10th at the Knitting Factory. Enjoy the mp3 for “Digital Haircut,” a Klaxons-esque jam below…

I’ve been pretty open about my love for The Very Best, and with good reason. The Radioclit/Esau Mwamwaya collaboration has produced insanely good music. We just got our copy of the new album (slated for a September release), and it’s easily one of my favorites of the year. I posted the first single, “Warm Heart Of Africa” a while back, and now I have some remixes for you. The first is by Architecture In Helsinki, who do an awesome job re-creating the track. The vocals are completely gone in this track, with the entire thing being re-created by horns, who imitate the hook perfectly. There are even some big band sounding trumpets, that remind me of The Muppets. You can’t go wrong with The Muppets, especially in my family. The track gains a little bit of steam towards the end, when some handclaps are added, and with about a minute left, all the horns drop out and some epic synths accompany Mr. Mwamwaya’s delightful voice for a little while. I’m normally not a sucker for remixes, but Architecture In Helsinki did a really nice job.
However, not everything can be so perfect. Metronomy also took a crack at the track, and they did a horrible job, to be terribly honest. They ruin the vocals by adding a terrible sounding robotic effect to it, and they completely ruin the beat by adding these ugly sounding synths. The vocals on this song are absolutely beautiful, and really make the song what it is, so Metronomy did a nice job ruining that. I’d love to hear your opinions, because I’m sure some of you will like it. Enjoy both remixes and the original.

Another fantastic track from Owen Pallett. This one is supposedly on his upcoming album, which should be coming out eventually. Thanks to Stereogum for the video.

Simian Mobile Disco are back. On the heel’s of 2007’s Attack Decay Sustain Release, James Ford and Jas Shaw are prepping a new album, Temporary Pleasure, for release on August 17th. The first single has been making it’s way around the web, and it’s brilliant. Featuring Chris Keating of Yeasayer, the beat starts of with the blips we’ve grown accustomed to, but builds into an epic, even R&B-esque jam. Temporary Pleasure will feature more vocals than ADSR, with guest appearances lined up from Beth Ditto (the Gossip), Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Jamie Lidell and Telepathe, as well as the aforementioned Keating. Again, this is a case where I fear a takedown notice, so I’m not going to post an mp3, but you’re more than welcome to grab it elsewhere at the HypeMachine. Or stream it on the band’s MySpace. Here’s the tracklisting…

I wrote about Serengeti & Polyphonic a while back, which you can check out here. The duo follows a similar path that most Anticon artists tend to follow. Sharp lyrics, interesting beats, and fun samples. “My Patriotism” features a busy beat, including an accordion that belongs on a gondola ride. Yoni and company totally re-work the track, simplifying it, while making the vocals a little more clear and understandable. The WHY? remix has a snare drum very similar (if not the same) as the one they used on “The Vowels Pt. 2″. A drone-y synth is on the track for the entire song, but loses a bit of it’s prominence when the song gets more of an up-tempo feel. The song doesn’t really change, except for the fact that some nice harmonies are layered on top of the rapping towards the end of the song. All in all, it’s a solid remix. Serengeti & Polyphonic will also be going on tour with Black Moth Super Rainbow, Deerhoof and WHY? (all on different tours, of course).

This isn’t what you’d expect from a band with a name taken from a Shins song, but I’m not complaining. Sleeping Lessons was brought to my attention by Andrew Seltzer, one of my good buddies at an NYU program I was just at. Some might say I’m biased, but I truly believe that these kids (yes, they’re 17) have a lot of talent. The best way to describe Sleeping Lessons would be Panic! At The Disco meets something a little bit more indiepopish - maybe the Shins or Death Cab for Cutie. While the mention of Panic! may turn some of our readers away (even though we’ve given P!ATD some GMM love before), this band is truly worth a listen. “In Control” is the third song on their EP, The Art of Growing Up, and builds with a delightful horn line reminiscent of the Beatles. The rest of the song follows suit, as it’s catchy as hell and has a good shot at bringing a smile to your face.

Nathan Williams is blowing up. He’ll be headlining a US tour this fall, visiting LA’s Echoplex, among many other larger venues. For those of you non-LA dwellers, we had a festival in LA this fall that upwards of 600 people attended, and it wasn’t full. That just shows how quickly Mr. Williams has been blowing up. Anyways, check out the dates and download an mp3 I’m sure you already have.

It’s tremendously hard to follow up a post like the last one, especially when it holds so much significance to us and our friends. I guess that one wonderful aspect of having a blog is that the post will always be there, so we will always remember her and the tragedy that was her far too early departure from our world.
On a much lighter note, Music Go Music will be releasing a new album on Secretly Canadian, which will be there debut release. The album is slated for an October 6th release date, and based on the 10 minute single, “Warm In The Shadows”, this album is going to be awesome. The combination of live and electronic instruments on this track is perfect, moving from funky guitar and synth parts, to a shredding guitar solo. Meanwhile, vocalist Gala Bell is singing both hauntingly and beautifully, blending in with the instruments perfectly. I’ve never been a fan of drastically long songs, especially ones of the “electronic” variety, but this track keeps me thoroughly entertained throughout.
