The Next Big Thing: Discovery

Discovery is a side-project between Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot’s Wes Miles. They have an album coming out July 7th on XL Recordgins (same label as VW) and the music they make together is just as good as the music they’ve made with their respective bands. It sounds a little bit like what you’d expect, softly sung pop vocals with melodies that show the musicianship of those involved. But Discovery is a little bit more interesting than pure indiepop. The synthlines are old and cheesy, and the drums are bitcrushed to oblivion. “Osaka Loop Line” is a cross between a rave, a gameboy and the good ‘ol Paul Simon-infused pop that we’ve come to love. It’s a really interesting and beautiful combination, and well worth a listen. Big things are definitely in store for the duo.
