Slipping Through The Cracks

Often times here at The Tape, we get so busy bringing you guys news and updates, that I sometimes forget to talk about what I’ve been listening to lately. Album reviews are very time consuming, so I really don’t have time to discuss every album I enjoy. So I figured I’d take the time now, to briefly describe some of the new albums that I’ve been listening to lately, and give you my favorite mp3 from each. Let’s get started.
A long time ago, I posted Themselves’ The Free Houdini mixtape. It was one 45 minute track, filled with guest appearances by some of the biggest names in indie rap. The deluxe edition recently arrived at my house, the only major difference being track markers. After listening to the entire album and loving it, I found “Rapping4money” to be a standout track. Maybe it was because my hero, Yoni Wolf had a verse, or maybe it was the fact that Clouddead was also featured on the track. Either way, Themselves made a great mixtape that has me really excited for their LP due out this summer.

Kurt Vile has been releasing fantastic material at a pretty ridiculous pace recently. Constant Hitmaker, God is Saying This to You…, and Hunchback are all absolutely awesome. Check out “Freeway” off of Constant Hitmaker. Pick up Constant Hitmaker here (vinyl or cd), and Hunchback here. All of these releases are wonderful, but I would recommend Constant Hitmaker if you had to pick just one.
Death are a 1970’s punk band from Detroit, made up of three brothers. The album got re-issued this year, and it’s absolutely phenomenal. It’s some of the most musical punk music I’ve ever heard, and the sound quality is amazing. “Punk” is also a very bad description for this album. It definitely has some punk elements to it, but labeling it with one genre, is unfair to the album and the band. I highly recommend the entire album, but check out “Rock-N-Roll Victim” for sampling purposes. Pick up the album here (vinyl or cd).
I don’t know where I heard about Thee Oh Sees, but I’m very glad I did. Their latest release, Help is fantastic. Noisy, loud, and raucous, just the way I like it. The album art is wonderful and colorful as well. Make sure to buy this album (vinyl or cd), and download my favorite track “Ruby Go Home”, below.
Japandroids have been getting hella hype lately. Yeah, I did say hella… That’s just how much hype is surrounding their latest release, Post-Nothing. This album is worthy of all the hype it’s received, it’s also worthy of the “best new music” label Pitchfork merited it with. Another noisy album, I think we’re starting to see a trend with my musical taste. If you hadn’t caught onto my noise/lo-fi addiction yet, you’re not very good at reading. Anyways, listen to “Young Hearts Spark Fire” and buy the LP (get free mp3’s!) here.

Yonder Is The Clock is The Felice Brothers’ best release to date. This album was hard to pick just one mp3 from. On one hand, I’ve been listening to “Run Chicken Run” non stop for quite some time now. On the other hand, “Penn Station” has recently been getting a lot of play in my Itunes and it’s really growing on me. Why don’t you download “Run Chicken Run” below, and buy the rest of the album here.

Clues is a wonderful project made up of former members of The Unicorns and Arcade Fire. This album has gained some hype, with “Perfect Fit” being the download of the week over at Insound. This album is a little bit weird, but in the totally awesome way. If you’re on the more experimental side of things, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick this up, which you can pre-order here (vinyl or cd). Check out “Perfect Fit”, below.
Like the old saying goes, I’m saving the best for last. Freak/psych folk is currently emerging as one of my favorite musical genres. This is probably all because of Woods. Songs of Shame has emerged as my favorite album of 2009 so far, with every song being fantastic. Jeremy Earl’s high pitched voice do wonders to each track, taking away attention from shredding guitar solos. It was hard to pick one track for this album as well, but I’m just going to go with “Rain On”. I can’t say enough about this album to do it justice. Pick it up… Now.
Just to be clear, this is in no way any kind of best of list. This is just a collection of albums I did not have time to individually post about. Here are a couple more great albums that I have failed to mention above:
Pink Mountaintops- Outside Love
Richard Swift- Atlantic Ocean
Micachu & The Shapes- Jewellery
Obits- I Blame You
Bullion- Young Heartache EP
Tiny Mixtapes Volume 1- Darfur
Crocodiles- Summer Of Hate
