Dragonslayer Preview

Sunset Rubdown’s new album Dragonslayer looks like this.

It is due out June 23rd. This is theĀ  fourth full-length from a band that over the course of their releases has evolved from a one-man home-recorded songwriting experiment into a world-touring group with five full time members. Dragonslayer is set to have 8 tracks, and the impressions given by the 3 already available reveal it to be a highly cohesive album, typical of Sunset Rubdown. “Idiot Heart” is available for download on The Tape here. On its own, the song seems to lack definition, but in the context of the album it will make more sense. A “sequel” to Lover’s penultimate track, “Trumpet, Trumpet, Toot! Toot!”, “You Go on Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)” was performed for a Black Cab Session, with part of the band canned into the back of a car banging away.

If you pre-order the album now (here), you get the mp3’s on May 21st, courtesy of Insound.

And finally, “Paper Lace” was recorded for Spencer Krug’s other project with some of his big-name buds, Dan Bejar of Destroyer/New Pornographers and Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes, on Swan Lake’s latest, Enemy Mine. We’ll see if the Sunset Rubdown version is any different, but more than any of the other songs, “Paper Lace” really feels like part of a whole that transcends itsĀ parts.

Check out Wolf Parade’s unreleased live song. Why it didn’t show up on last year’s At Mount Zoomer is the great mystery of 2008.
