The Tape @ Coachella: Sunday
Written by pistachionut on Sunday, 26 of April , 2009 at 6:01 pm
The third day of the weekend was quite a doozy. The hottest day yet, cranking in at a whopping 101º a spattering of lo-fi/punk acts in the afternoon in the Mojave tent. Vivian Girls kicked off the day for us, and we split time between the girls and anticon. act Themselves. Themselves are Doseone (Adam Drucker) and Jel (Jeff Logan). Jel tore it up on the MPC, creating really, really sick beats on the fly. Doseone rapped over them at breakneck pace. His somewhat maniacal banter and methods of fucking with the security guards (who I guess are required to stand as still as the guards at Buckingham Palace) drew comparisons to Batman’s anti-hero, the Joker. Back to Vivian Girls, they played a quick and energetic set of the songs off their debut self titled album. Not incredible but certainly not bad either. After that, we headed over to the main stage to catch Tape favorites The Knux. Brothers Krispy and Al Rah put on a very energetic show with many more live instruments than you’d expect from a hip hop act. DJ Skeet Skeet (yeah, that’s his name) played behind them, providing the drums, while instrumentalists played keyboards and guitar. Al Rah even played guitar on a song or two. The played songs off their debut album, Remind Me in Three Days. Things started off a bit slowly but they really found a groove for “Roxanne” and “Cappuccino.” Midway through the Knux, I headed over to catch some of Friendly Fires. The Austrialian electro/pop group put on a fantastic show. They stormed through their self-titled album, ended the set with a beautiful renditions of “Paris” and “White Diamonds.” The Gobi tent was a great place for these guys, as the packed crowd was really able to get into it. After that, I caught a bit of Fucked Up, which was fucking hectic. Lead singer Concentration Camp cut his forehead open and then took his shirt off and climbed the scaffolding. Really crazy. I didn’t catch any of Okkervil River, although everyone I’ve talked to said they were fantastic. Sad I missed that one. I wound up at Busy P, which was really uninteresting and generic. During Brian Jonestown Massacre the heat really hit me. I just sat in the back of the tent and relaxed. I didn’t have the stamina for Lupe Fiasco on the main stage, which was apparently one of the best shows of the weekend. After that, I was well rested and headed to the Outdoor Theater for Antony and the Johnsons. They were my biggest of the entire weekend. I normally really can’t stand Antony, but this set was brilliant. He brought out electronic musician Matthew Herbert and they performed re-imaginings of songs from Antony’s The Crying Light. It was really gorgeous and Antony’s voice carried through the desert air perfectly. After that, I saw X, one of my favorite shows of the weekend. John Doe, Billy Zoom, Exene Cervenka and DJ Bonebrake delivered a perfect set. The setlist was fan-requested, and X managed to get through most of Los Angeles and some other material. Really, really energetic and really, really fun. After that was Late of the Pier. Ill-fitted for the Sahara Tent at 8:30 at night, the crowd was rather small. That didn’t stop these boys from rocking real hard. They were totally into it and completely fucking killed it. My Bloody Valentine had everyone in awe with their 15 minute noise breakdown, which was one of the loudest experiences of my life. We caught a bit of Public Enemy (including Flava Flav’s disastrous stage dive) before it was time to leave and call it a weekend. I left Sunday feeling a little bit disappointed that the heat had effected me so much earlier in the day, and I wasn’t able to see Lupe and Okkervil River. But all in all, it was a great day and an even better weekend. See you next year, Coachella.
