Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head

Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head are, simply put, the next logical step. Take all the “buzz bands” of the moment - MGMT, Passion Pit, Phoenix, Late of the Pier - and pop them in a blender. Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head is the product. The musical puree, if you will, takes every element of sound that was big in 2008 and pushes it an inch further. Moving less and less from the dramatic guitar riffs so popular a few years ago (think Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Editors), everything is now synth driven. The lead riffs are played on cheesy vintage synths (cue Passion Pit) with only some small interplay from staggering guitar chords (cue Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Editors). You also have the lyrical charm of Los Campesinos - even some Tim and Eric in there (Beard Lust).
NPSH are a combination of everything hip right now. And at times, that makes them very, very hard to listen to. Some songs on the album are unbearably hip - “Beard Lust” and “Sophisticated Side Ponytail.” Those two songs stand out on the album as being incredibly douchey, and designed for the kids who find themselves not cool enough for Totally Michael but way too cool for MGMT. A lot of the album sounds like it’s designed to cater to specific audiences, almost on a song by song basis.
The album has a few standout songs. And when the stand out, they really shine. “Hush Hush,” “Iceage Babeland” and “Me Yr Daughter” are great new era pop songs. They draw exactly the right elements and hit the right notes. It’s hard to get that 13 songs in a row.

i’m a huge NPSH fan, they’ve been that hip for years now…fuckin’ ahead of their time. however, as much as i love them, i don’t think that they should be opening for lily allen and such. a matt & kim tour would be ep1c.
