Blink-182: Reunited At Last [Reunited Blink-182 Correspondent Jeremy Katzenstein]

This Sunday at the Grammys, Blink-182 reunited after four years of “indefinite hiatus”. The band announced a new album and a world tour coming Summer 2009.
After their break-up in February of 2005, it became known that hostilities had formed between Tom DeLonge (guitar/vocals) and bandmates Mark Hoppus (bass/vocals) and Travis Barker (drums).
The break-up resulted in 2 new projects. Tom went on to form the band Angels and Airwaves. The band’s music sounded very different than the classic four chord, happy, potty humor of Blink-182. They sounded more like the Postal Service got a very whiny and sad singer with less intricate beats.
Mark and Travis went on to form (+44). The band seemed to embody what Blink-182 would sound like if they had kept their Enema of the State sound. The difference was that there was no longer the influence of Tom DeLonge in the songwriting.
These projects weren’t nearly as successful as Blink-182. They lacked the contrast in the songwriting of Mark and Tom resulting in music that was too bland and predictable.
But can Blink-182 be as successful as they once were? After quitting at their prime with hits like “Feeling This” and “I Miss You”, can they ever write a comparable song? Some people feel that Blink’s potty humor and simple guitar riffs won’t be accepted into the modern era of music. Since their break-up no other mainstream band has been able to fill their shoes. It is a type of music that people have not been hearing for the past four years. Some people might be happy to have it back. Some people might have moved on. Only time will tell.
According to Blink, they are “picking up where [they] left off”. Theoretically this means that the band’s new album would be heading in the emo direction. Because of the different directions taken by the band members when they were on their own, it seems like the main cause of Blink’s break-up was that Tom saw the band heading in one direction while Mark and Travis saw it heading in another. If Blink was able to get back together after their previous disagreements, it is probable that the band will not exactly be picking up where they left off. Some kind of compromise must have been reached. Unfortunately, this means that we can only speculate on the direction of Blink-182.
Look out for Blink-182 in 2009. Everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure will be coming back with full force this year. Who knows what surprises they have in store for us.
