Automatic Drawing

Automatic Drawing are a lovely 5 piece band out of Los Angeles, California. Drawing influences from the likes of Rilo Kiley, Interpol, Modest Mouse, and Arcade Fire, (along with many others) Automatic Drawing reminds me of a more charming version of some of the bands listed above. Singer Drew Kirkpatrick has a wonderful voice that meshes with the indie pop guitar sounds nicely. The band currently consists of Kirkpatrick along with Rachel Koukal (vocals, keys, ukulele,), Diana Salier (guitar), Sarah Hithe (bass), and Jon Efe (drums and percussion). The band released The Captain and the Sea EP in June of 2008. You can pick up a copy through their Myspace.
A standout track to me is the title track, entitled “The Captain and the Sea.” This song’s quirky vocals scream Modest Mouse to me. But as the song progresses and the guitar and 16th note hi hat pattern start to kick in, this song starts to sound more like an Interpol song. It’s easy to see why they list bands like these as their influences. I highly recommend this track, which you can grab below.
