Animal Collective Tutorial

Written by ashkap on Saturday, 6 of December , 2008 at 10:29 am

In anticipation of Animal Collective’s 9th studio album (and around the 22nd Animal Collective-related album release,) Merriweather Post Pavilion, The Tape presents the Animal Collective Tutorial, to get all those who aren’t familiar with the band ready for the new release.

We begin with the first, most experimental stage of Animal Collective, exemplified by their first album, Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished. One of the more accessible songs off of this early release is Chocolate Girl. This is a good example of early Animal Collective and hints to the direction of their later work. They soon moved on to more traditional musical endeavors, while retaining their taste and curiosity for making unorthodox music. Leaf House off of their “acoustic” album Sung Tongs shows their tribal rhythms and their ever-present unique style of lyricism and vocal delivery. Who Could Win a Rabbit is a large step in the pop direction that the later work embraces. Animal Collective’s first truly all-accessible pop album, Feels, features two of their most developed and beautiful pieces, the popular Grass and fan favorite The Purple Bottle. These songs bring the most comparisons to The Beach Boys, an idea that may seem ridiculous at first, but after further listening to the Animal Collective discography makes more sense. The wildly sucessful Fireworks from the 2007 album Strawberry Jam epitomizes the pop mission of the current Animal Collective. Finally, Brothersport, from the upcoming album, represents the ultimate output of Animal Collective: music that does not sound like anything else.

“brothersport” sounds like EL GUINCHO if he was to sing in english. nevertheless, its still a fun song.

To NOAH:

you really are a fucking retard.
Yes, brothersport has been around longer than El Guincho!
They been playing it live way before that shitty el g. record

if you are doubting the fact that el Guincho is basically just ripping ac/pb off then you are even dumber than i thought.

I saw AC in May 2007 at which show they played “Brothersport”; not only that, but I had heard the song a million times before I even went to that show. Besides, Panda Bear’s single “I’m Not/Comfy in Nautica” came out in 2005… They’ve been planting Brothersport’s seeds for a long time. El Guincho is a blatant AC ripoff.

That said, he does a good job of ripping them off–I think his album is pretty awesome, so stop hating
