The Tape

Knives

I’v recently unearthed some new material involving NY’s finest foursome. By this, of course I refer to the musical miracle that is Grizzly Bear. Their songs embody nearly everything I look for in music: soaring melodies, complex harmonies, odd instrumentations, amazing orchestrations, insane drum beats, and an all around eclectic sound. Their use of both acoustic and electric instruments makes for an intensely layered sound and still more impressive is drummer Christopher Bear who utilizes a stripped down set up, which generally is without a bass drum or rack tom, to create grooves that most drummers couldn’t accomplish when given a ten piece kit. With musical influences the likes of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys who’s style Grizzly Bear pays homage to in their layered harmonies, this Brooklyn band is without a doubt one of the best in current music. Grizzly Bear has toured extensively this summer, opening for Radiohead as well as booking slots a huge festivals like All Points West and Lollapalooza. In addition they played a very interesting program in march at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in which the orchestra played pieces selected by the band for the first half. I was able to attend that show with fellow blogger(pistachionut) and needless to say it was unbelievable. It seems that Grizzly bear will now return to writing and prepping for a new release. Until then here are some remixes and live, unreleased tracks for you to enjoy.

Three “Knife” remixes.

Roc Knife

Really incredible Jay-Z mash up. Roc Boys fits almost seamlessly with “Knife”.

Knife (Girl Talk Remix)

This one older than the first but is still a great mash ups by one of todays great mixers.

Grizzly Bear’s Knife Vs. The Knife’s Heartbeats

Not only is it clever to mix Knives but this song is even better than the humor in its title and although i would agree that it’s a little repetitive its interesting to hear Grizzly Bear’s acoustic sound mixed with the deep synths on heartbeats.

This on is an unreleased track which was recorded live on Letterman earlier this summer.

Two Weeks (Live)

They have struck again with very impressive new material. Sick sort of tapping melody during the chorus and of course pocket drums.

Just For Fun

Little Brother (Electric)

My favorite Grizzly bear track. It has great rhythm and it builds to a really strong climactic chorus. This was on their most recent release, “Friend EP” and is a live recording. Enjoy
