Fuck You, MSTRKRFT

Written by pistachionut on Wednesday, 10 of September , 2008 at 5:36 pm

This is a retroactive call on douchebaggery. JFK, Al-P, take a step back and literally FUCK YOUR OWN FACE. MSTRKRFT has been well known on the dance scene for a while since their debut EP in 2006. Only recently did I realize a cut off that EP, “Neon Knights” is a major rip of Daft Punk’s masterpiece “Rollin’ and Scratchin’.” Listen. The synth riffs are identical. Even the intro of a 4/4 kick beat stay the same.

MSTRKRFT - Neon Knights

Daft Punk - Rollin’ and Scratchin’

Now in 2006 I might’ve found this acceptable. There are some unarguably good songs on the EP — “Easy Love” and “Street Justice.” In fact, that whole EP is rock solid. Fun, danceable, not overdistorted. The same categories that make Hot Chip, Chromeo and Justice’s † so great. MSTRKRFT have been on a downward trajectory since that EP. Their remixes went from being original and fun to redundant and intended purely for the dancefloor. They came from such different musical backgrounds (JFK in DFA1979, Al-P in GirlsAreShort), but they’ve become just like everyone else. It’s a downward spiral of copies. Their recent work has been shameful. Their latest track, “Bounce” featuring N.O.R.E. is an ode to partying, in the same vein as a song I’ve openly trashed on this blog before, Busy P’s “To Protect and Entertain.” Both by electro producers featuring hip hop artists and about how hard they love to party. Fuck it all. I apologize to any MSTRKRFT fans I may offend by doing this, or to Jesse F. Keeler and Al Puodziukas if they happen to stumble upon it. That would actually be pretty tight. But regardless, get your heads on straight-fans and artists.

PS MSTRKRFT we still love you but you’ve changed. Come back Real MSTRKRFT.

yea i think it’s a stretch to call neon knights a “major rip” especially considering the standard the electronic music scene has for the, erm, “borrowing” of ideas (see justice’s phantom pt. 1 and the song that was “sampled” to make it). and i don’t know how i feel about knocking them for making music “purely for the dance floor”, they do make dance music after all. the rest of the post is an attempt to define current mstrkrft as bounce. now first i think to attack a dance song for being shallow and superficial is almost redundant. in fact for more shallow and superficial lyrics just see easy love and street justice, songs i recall someone calling “unarguably good”. i happen to like bounce quite a bit, but then again i’m the last person on earth who likes to protect and entertain as well, so that’s beside the point. the point is you’re doing an excellent job ignoring the rest of mstrkrft’s recent work including the love in this club remix. i still love you tristan, cheers.

They totally ripped off Human after all from Daft Punk on that new track Bounce, you forgot to mention that.. Its funny cause I have been a MSTRKRFT fan for a bit, but it just sounds like their losing it…
