Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing

Written by pistachionut on Friday, 30 of May , 2008 at 4:05 pm

Wale’s mixtape about nothing dropped today. Oh yes. A Seinfeld inspired mixtape. Go hit it up, its only available streaming and downloadable at http://10deep.com/WALEMIXTAPE/

I highly recommend track 6 (”The Kramer”). It has one of the greatest messages of any hip hop track I’ve ever heard. This is so seriously worth a listen.

10Deep has also put out a Wale “Serenity Now” tshirt, which I’m seriously thinking purchasing. Pretty legit.

Katzenstein Weekly #1

Written by pistachionut on Wednesday, 28 of May , 2008 at 7:13 pm

I’m starting a new column here on the Tape called “Katzenstein Weekly.” It’ll focus on the prolific Katzenstein brothers and their musical creativity. Every Wednesday I’ll post a few tracks of theirs they’ve given me. Today we have Jason Katzenstein’s song, “Indie Chicks.” Sure to be an instant hit among the trendy male crowd, the song disses just about everything currently wrong with female hipster culture. I couldn’t get a copy of the lyrics but be sure to keep your ears peeled for the game that is being spit.

Guilty Music Monday #15

Written by lupethefiasco on Tuesday, 27 of May , 2008 at 4:31 pm

If 15 were my lucky number, this post would be lucky. But it’s not so on we go.

First we have “Smell Yo Dick” by Riskay. Yes her name is Riskay. Blasting this song at your home is bound to get you some odd looks from parents, friends, etc. Mostly because it has a love ballad piano line, with the lines “Let me smell yo dick.”

Riskay- Smell Yo Dick

Next we have “Put On” by Young Jeezy and Kanye West. Something about Kanye and Autotune that don’t mix, but mix so well at the same time. Him whining into the Autotune makes me so happy!!! There is no way Kanye would actually have the balls to sing these things with his regular voice, so he drowns his sorrows with the Autotune.

Young Jeezy- Put On (Feat. Kanye West)

Last is possibly the best one yet, and was recommended by our very own Tristan Rodman. “Numb/Encore” which was a collaboration between Jay-Z and Linkin Park. This is an absolutely amazing mash-up type thing and leaves me feeling guilty every time.

Alan Wilkis

Written by caz4mack on Sunday, 25 of May , 2008 at 9:49 pm

This guy shot us an email a few weeks back, with some tracks that I really dug. He then sent us a cd which I got lazy with, so my apologies with this late post. He has some very interesting music. I’d call it a mix of Beck inspired vocals, a lot of funk, some electro flair, while still being super poppy. He has an Album entitled “Babies Dream Big.”

Check out these tracks, and let us know what you think. Also check out his myspace.

Dj Doc Rok just released his newest project which is 50 Cent mashed up with some classic oldies. Here’s what the man himself has to say about it:

“I think this may be my best work so far, using an entire decade allowed me a bit more freedom in song choice.” If you guys like this, make sure to check out his blog .

We Are Jeneric

Written by gzabriel on Saturday, 24 of May , 2008 at 10:16 pm

Sometimes I hear music that just begs to be heard alone, at night, while pondering general existence and other miscellany. It is at these moments that I find refuge in artists that have provided me with such an experience in the past, Sufjan, Dntel, and Hot Chip to name a few. Ladies and gentlemen I am proud to announce a new addition to the lineup: We Are Jeneric. Perfect, intimate, folky bedroom music for musing on your future and singing along to under your breath. The kind of music you want to share with your friends on a mix cd with handdrawn artwork and a meticulously scribbled track list. It’s precious and beautiful and I think you’ll like it. Head over to their aforementioned myspace and pick up their album “In The Parlor With The Moon”.

Kanye West- Flashing Lights Video (Second Version)

Written by lupethefiasco on Saturday, 24 of May , 2008 at 12:44 pm

An alternate one to the woman with the shovel, this one focuses on a different woman who parties, and tries on hundreds of outfits while once in a while flashing (no pun intended) her thong. This video definitely makes a lot more sense than the shovel video, but I’m still a little skeptical on its purpose.

X.O., I XOXOXOXO YOU!!! + Wale Video!!!

Written by lupethefiasco on Friday, 23 of May , 2008 at 10:43 pm

Confusing title, basically I love X.O. Just found over at gorillavsbear, this is basically the best song ever. I’ve never enjoyed a sample in a hip hop song, as much as I do this one. If you can’t recognize the sample it’s Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So.” If I were you, I’d go listen to this song forever and ever.

P.S. For my best friends only, here is the W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. video. Via Critical Acclaim.

New Music (Ratatat, Gemstones, Kid Cudi, and Common)

Written by lupethefiasco on Friday, 23 of May , 2008 at 6:47 pm

A few songs floating around the blogs lately.

Yet another rumored track off the new Ratatat album entitled LP3. The song is called “Mirando” and sounds awfully electro and world all at the same time. Yet once in a while, that moaning Ratatat guitar makes an appearance.

Next is a new Gemstones song entitled “G4″ featuring Lupe Fiasco. This song is going to be on his new mixtape entitled The Testimony or something like that. Anyways, this song is sort of catchy but it’s an average song at best. But what’s really troubling is Lupe. He sings the chorus about driving a fast car, and it seems that he’s selling out for everything he was once against. His song “Dumb It Down” becomes less and less impressive every time he does a remix with Young Jeezy, or talks about cars and money. Sorry Lupe, but what happened to the real hip-hop?

Next we have a few Kid Cudi songs, which make me really excited. The first one is entitled “The Biggest Grinder” and is a Rick Ross beat. I’ve never heard the Rick Ross song, but I’m pretty sure that Matt Kemp comes out to it for every one of his at bats at Dodger Stadium. Probably to appease all the Doyer fans. Anyways, I can only imagine how much better it is than Rick Ross’ version. The second song is him rapping over a new N.E.R.D. song entitled “Spazz.” I haven’t really listened to the N.E.R.D. song, but the Cudi one is great. The beat is really fun and his voice just sounds so energetic. Both of these will be featured on his mixtape/album A Kid Named Cudi. Hence his name, Kid Cudi.

Last is a new Common song with Pharrell called “Universal Mind Control.” This beat is way more new school than I am used to for Common, but he handles it nicely. I have always found Common’s voice incredibly soothing, and this strays away from that which is nice. Pharrell raps the chorus with a little bit of a robotic tone to his voice. Overall a fun track. Expect it to be featured on his upcoming album, out this summer.
