The Tape

Scarves of red tied ’round their throats

Seattle band Fleet Foxes is causing quite a stir with their much blogged jams. Their debut Sun Giant EP was recently graced with an (drumroll please) 8.7 from Pitchfork. TA DAAA.

non-EP track White Winter Hymnal shows real promise for this little group.

Oh but we go out at night

Written by ashkap on Thursday, 28 of February , 2008 at 11:53 pm

Our third favorite canadian band, Born Ruffians, just dropped their new album, Red, Yellow & Blue. The curiously In Rainbows-esque cover art is below. It really is a great album and surpasses by far their self titled ep, which was found in the Amoeba clearance for 3 bucks. shame.

Red, Yellow, and Blue is really a step up from the EP. Y’all know I’m a sucker for yelpy Canadian indie rock, but this album really stands on its own. The band, though it is only drums, guitar, and bass, sounds expansive and deep. Harmonized vocals and rounds make for more interesting sounds on many tracks, like Barnacle Goose. There really isn’t an obviously weak track, maybe Badonka Donkey, but the real standout is “I Need A Life” This song it just amazing. Emotional, raw, and full of that Born Ruffians energy you all know and love. Back and forth vocals speak lines like “my cup is half empty, been that way all my life.” and “the sun is shinin’ but we stay inside, stay in bed till we feel alright” but after all these seemingly dreary lines, the truth comes out: “oh but we go out at night.” Born Ruffians may be not such a ridiculous name, cause these kids were born to party.

Tokyo Police Club- In A Cave

Finally!!!! There is a new TPC song, I am overjoyed. Tokyo Police Club has been one of my favorite bands for a while now. I was overjoyed even before I heard this track. This song is absolutely amazing. For sure one of my favorite TPC tracks, even though I’ve only listened a few times. This song is extremely catchy from the lyrics to the piano line. Towards the end, there are some hand claps I could have lived without, but it added some flavor so who am I to complain?

The only tagline to rival Juno’s “Silencio, old man!” is the album title of the Los Campesinos debut, Hold On Now Youngster. The way I’ll be doing this review is taking you through the tracklist as I listen to it. Let’s begin. The review and two tracks after the jump. (Read more…)

Just cause the expiration date is ‘82 don’t mean it isn’t good in ‘08

Just came across this fresh track by Orange Juice, the 80’s band credited by Belle and Sebastian and countless others as inspirational. Their hit track Rip It Up from the similarly titled album sounds fresh, almost as if it just popped out of Chromeo, or more accurately, Cut Copy.

Tuesdays School Days #4

Written by caz4mack on Tuesday, 26 of February , 2008 at 4:02 pm

school-days.jpgOk so you know the drill by now, or maybe you don’t. Anyways we post songs that have been stuck in our head all day.

Macklin: Billy Preston-Nothing From Nothing

I have had this song stuck in my head since this Saturday when I went to see “Be Kind Rewind.” It’s basically the best feel good song ever, which is why it’s my “Tuesdays School Days” pick.

Tristan: Rick Ross - Speedin’ (Remix feat. R. Kelly and Chris Brown)

Cheesy rap songs are the new hip thing. What could be cheesier than “The Boss.” He hustles every day, dealing with people of questionable existence, who may or may not owe him 100 favors. In his newest track, he features R. Kelly. R. Kelly’s verse in this song is better than his line, “I be drilling these chicks like major pain, while I make it rain, damn boy do it again.. OH!” in the Fat Joe “Make It Rain” remix. Best part of this song: “Sittin’ in my living room watching the Grammys, wishing it was me that was on the Grammys.”

Willie: Anamanaguchi- Helix Nebula

This song is good. I like it.

Every Hour Someone Makes Electro And Every Half Hour A Blog Posts It

I don’t know much about Just A Band except that they sound a lot like Boys Noize and Teenage Bad Girl in a very good non plagiarizing way and that it’s also impossible to effectively google the name. After myspacing them I have concluded that they are a french duo. They are a french duo making electro to reiterate. Considering that everyone within a 100 mile radius of Paris has a laptop and Ableton you guys are just gonna have to trust me on this. These guys are good.

Guilty Music Monday #4

I am exhausted, so let us get right into it. First we have ourselves the song from that movie Once. I never saw the movie, but the song is damn catchy. It’s called “Falling Away”, and it’s performed by the couple in the movie, who are currently dating in real life as well. Crazy, I know. Next we have a Fall Out Boy song. Yeah, Yeah… I know the reaction “Ewwww Fall Out Boy, they suck.” They may suck, but they make catchy music and they got Jay-Z to speak on the beginning of their album so please do shut up. The song is called “Thriller.” I’m tired so that is it, but next weeks will be filled, don’t fret.

Snake & Jet’s Amazing Bullit Band

Written by gzabriel on Monday, 25 of February , 2008 at 10:37 am

Snake

So the Go Team goes back in time about 35 years and buys an organ. Ninja grows up on surf rock and psychedelic pop. They record all their songs on a small 4 track recorder and then you’ve got something that sounds like Snake & Jet’s Amazing Bullit Band. Capturing the energy of the Go Team with the retro feel of it’s likely inspirations in the 60s and 70s. The tracks are fierce and have some seriously fresh organ work making it almost a punk band but much more melodic, and they’re from Denmark. I highly recommend checking these guys out.
